The Power of Play

We live hectic lives. It seems with each passing day, our to-do lists get longer. So much of our time is focused on work and family commitments, and we often have little time for fun. Real, uninhibited fun. Many of us carve out and allocate specific time for leisure, but it ends up being time spent watching tv, or in front of the computer watching youtube or scrolling the web. I am just as guilty as anyone. I love me some Netflix. But, like so many, I have forgotten about play. Simple things like throwing a frisbee, dancing in the kitchen to a favourite song, building a snowman, or just acting silly.

When was the last time you joined your child on the playground rather than watching from the sidelines? We are so programmed to act like adults. After all, we are adults now, and the time for playing and having uninhibited fun is over right? WRONG!!!!! The simple act of play can add so much to our lives that I pledge from this day forward to bring back play to my life. I will not be afraid of looking silly or embarrassed for spending time letting loose and playing.

Life is way too short to always act like an adult. It is never too late to develop your playful side. Not only does play give you time to forget about your commitments, even for a few minutes, it relieves stress improves energy and keeps you feeling young and energetic. Why does exercise have to be equated with self-sacrifice and drudgery? Why not add some fun......play soccer with your kids, try a new exercise class, make a snow angel in freshly fallen snow.....I did the other day and it was so much fun. So, who is with me? Who is ready to take life by the balls (yes I have a potty mouth) and embrace play.....laugh more, dance more, and add more joy to your life.
