The Fear Reflex

/fear/

Definition:

A distressing emotion caused by the anticipation of perceived impending pain, threat or danger of something bad that is going to happen.

The primitive reflex of fear can wreak havoc on your body – your heart may begin to race at an excessive pace, your adrenaline glands work on overtime, your blood pressure reacts unfavourably, and your mind … well your mind begins to analyze, over-analyze, and create various extreme scenarios that may or may not happen. Depending on the type of fear, fear can be somewhat of a ticking time bomb when it relates to your decisions. Fear drives so many emotions and often controls our choices in life. Sometimes this fear can be so strong it is paralyzing and it ultimately prevents you from moving forward with your life and actually pursuing your dreams. You can give in to fear and let it weaken you, or you can take a leap of faith and dive right into your fears and have the belief that everything is going to be okay. The fear of the unknown is a given, is ever present, and all of our fears have the tendency to emerge naturally. When we feel fear, our bodies tend to invoke that expected protective instinct and we inherently know to proceed with caution. Gaining a better understanding of all the various types of fear we could potentially experience in our lifetimes and mastering our natural animal instincts could help us all grow tremendously at the root level. It’s all about trusting our own intuition, embracing challenges, and losing the resistance or hesitations that are associated with trying something new. How should we expect to feel when we are trying something new for the first time?

We all need to learn to decipher our fears and ‘fear less’.
