My Life In Quarantine

By Wildflower. Makayla Hidalgo has a passion for film making & gratitude for the stuff that matters.

"In these scary and uncertain times, it is so important to love and support one another more than ever."

Look at the way the sunshine hits the edge of this plant. It shines and illuminates, making the leaf a brighter shade of green and leaving a darker shade along its edges. But when the sun is covered by the clouds the colour changes to a darker shade of green. And when the moon comes up, the colour changes once more to an extremely dark green. The colours of this plant are constantly changing, but are they really changing at all? Or is it other variables that make it look like this plant is changing colour?

The environment around us has a big effect on the people we become and often times it's hard to find our true colours in the mess of this fast-paced world. We are constantly being told how we should look, what we should do. There's a pressure to have everything figured out when we feel like we are still trying to catch up.

And then suddenly ...

Everything.

Just.

Stopped.

Roads became empty. Stores were closed. We don't get together with people the way we used to. This world is in a pandemic and we are told to stay hone to flatten the curve.

Hello :)

Welcome to my life in quarantine.

I've slowed down and started taking the time to notice the little things ... like the sound of birds chirping as I wake up in the morning, and the way the sunlight streams through my window. The weather has gotten warmer and the plants are coming alive after a long winter. I love taking in the beautiful nature I once took for granted. I've stopped to notice the clouds passing by in the sky. The sun as it rises in the morning and the full moon at night which reminds me of how small this world really is, and that no matter who you are or where you are in the world, we all see the same moon at the end of the day.

Even though there are restrictions to going out, I'm so grateful to be able to connect online with the people in my life who are important to me. I'm beginning to truly appreciate this wonderful temple I call my body and expressing my thanks to it by exercising and stretching more often and putting foods in it to keep it healthy.

I've been in the kitchen a lot more looking up fun recipes to try and realizing how many amazing things you can make from simple ingredients. My family and I have been gardening and this year we plan to grow zucchini. I've been going on bike rides through nature trails. I'm learning more sign language, and I recently started learning about graphic design. I feel so lucky to have access to the internet and want to take advantage of all the things I'm able to learn for free.

I had to go to the hospital to get surgery done. It was very painful and hard at times, but the support I got from my family and friends made the experience much easier.

Since then I've been learning how to knit a scarf. I love how you can take something as simple as yarn, and a few twists and turns can turn it into something wonderful.

I'm finally reading all the books I once put off. I've been playing the ukulele and I've been spending more time with my family. In these scary and uncertain times, it is so important to love and support one another more than ever. We live in a world where we focus too much on outer colours and we often forget the colours within that define who we truly are.

We can be quick to make judgements, but if we slowed down we would notice that there is so much more than meets the eye, and there is beauty in every colour. Why would wearing a blue earring versus a pink earring make a difference in the way you see one earring in a negative way? As both colours are equally beautiful.

I hope one day when we all come out of this, we've slowed down, taken a new look around, and begin taking the steps to make this world a better place than when we found it.
