Killing Time & Procrastination




Procrastination is a funny concept and can be attributed to various factors. The only thing it has in common with all the variables that cause it is the fact that when we procrastinate, we are killing time. Procrastination delays or postpones things. Sometimes the delay is for good reasons and sometimes not-so-good reasons. One of the not-so-good reasons that may cause procrastination is fear. Fear can literally stop your ability to get out and experience the world. When we are fearful, we tend to procrastinate because we convince ourselves that the time is not ‘right’ and we come up with numerous excuses to justify it. What we fail to realize is that the right time may never come. So accept that thought and make the time.


Another not-so-good reason is that we often believe we are too overloaded or too busy to start yet another activity, such as fulfilling a wish. At the onset, fulfilling a wish may seem overwhelming, or even rather frivolous and carefree, whereby lessoning the other responsibilities you may already have on your plate. But know this – everyone, everywhere, always has something else to do. There will never be the ‘perfect’ time to make room for new things in your life. There will only be time if you make the time. So take action by removing all those meaningless activities that are essentially contributing to your procrastination and begin the journey towards fulfilling just one wish. Turn your procrastination into motivation.


I like to think procrastination can also be a matter of perspective. There are plenty of good reasons to pause and temporarily postpone something. Taking time to finish a project, or work on something, can actually be beneficial and bring you new insights that you may not have had if you didn’t take a break from what you were doing. While you may first think you are avoiding seeing something to completion, maybe it’s your intuition telling you to take the break. This is the moment where you need to take precaution. It’s simply how you choose to spend your time that defines your style of procrastination.
