A Beginner's Guide to Natural & Organic Salves

Salve - /sav/

- an ointment used to promote healing of the skin or as protection.

Natural & Organic

If you are looking for something more natural and organic for your beauty routine, salves are definitely the way to go. Botanical salves nourish your skin, hydrate, and promote healing. They are gentle, therapeutic, yet simple and effective - the perfect combination for a DIY (do-it-yourself) recipe!

Before modern medicines and pharmacies, apothecaries served as the equivalent of today's pharmacists. Apothecaries would both make the remedies and prescribe them using weights and scales to accurately measure the amount of herbs and spices required for each prescription. Salves date back centuries to apothecaries and use nothing but real plants and simple ingredients.

How To Make Your Own Botanical Salve

Ingredients

  • 8oz of either olive oil, calendula oil, or almond oil (all body-safe oils only)

  • 1 oz beeswax grated or pellets

  • essential oils - we like to mix a few of our favourite flavours (see below). The unique combinations are endless!

  • a pinch of dried herbs & fruits - to garnish

  • double boiler

  • mason jar or apothecary tin

Directions

  1. Combine the oil and beeswax in a double boiler on warm heat. Stir until melted. Tip: adding more beeswax will firm the texture if it is too soft.

  2. Once you are happy with the consistency/texture, pour the warm salve into your container(s). Add a few drops of your essential oil(s) and stir.

  3. Once the salve has cooled down, add a pinch of your favourite dried herbs/fruits to the top of the salve. Tighten the lids on the containers and store in a dark, cool place. Natural salves will typically last up to a year - but you will more than likely have already used it all up by then! ;)
